Venetian Backwater Original Oil Painting
32 x 24 inches approx framed.
A very different subject for me this one. Though it’s a city I have visited a number of times I have never tried to capture it in paint. It was a wonderful challenge to try to bring to life the subtle light and textures which make Venice so captivating. You get a real sense of modern life being lived on top of layers of history dating back centuries. And I wanted to paint it like that, with the modern boats tied up alongside the crumbling brick and plaster of the buildings. The strong yellow of the boat on the left was particularly striking. The way it reflected it’s colours across the worn surfaces of the building, coupled with the beautiful milky green of the water.
It was certainly a challenging painting which required numerous glazes and adjustments, all the elements needed to come together to create that sense of being there. A calm moment away from the crowds
I hope this will be the first of many Italian paintings, already planning my next trip.
